Welcome to 7th Grade Life Science


7th Grade Life Science is a course that will help you learn about the living world around you. The course is prepared to teach you about how this field of science relates to your life and to make science interesting and exciting. You will learn about the natural world by using labs, projects, videos, and even by bringing some of that life into the classroom to examine! This year our units of study will include: Intro to Science & Science Skills, Characteristics & Organization of Life, Classification, Animals & Behavior, Cells, DNA & Genetics, Human Body Systems and Ecology.

This wiki will be our learning hub for 7th Grade Life Science. Think of it as an interactive website in which you can:


  • Check on assignments & due dates
  • Create & personalize your own page to manifest your learning
  • Collaborate with other students on projects
  • Communicate with the world about your exciting science discoveries

Blog and Wiki Warranty


Please Read and Follow these guidelines carefully

  1. The wiki and blog exist on the Internet, which is open to the public to view. You are representing yourself, your class & your school. Be sure anything you write is something you can be proud of and is YOUR OWN!
  2. NEVER give out personal information on the wiki or blog, including last names, addresses, etc.
  3. All writing should be school-appropriate, respectful & free from harmful, hateful or offensive language.
  4. Do not complain about others on your blog or wiki, including your peers, other teachers and parents.
  5. Use full words and sentences – please no IM or texting slang!
  6. Keep the writing classroom/science focused. No chatting about personal life, weekend plans, etc.
  7. Make sure the things you write are factual; link to your sources.
  8. Be sure you use copyright free images & sounds and that you have permission from peers if using photos of them.
  9. Only students that are registered by Mrs. Heitz can edit this wiki and I will be notified of any edits to the wiki.
  10. Do not edit the work of a classmate without including a written explanation for the changes in the Discussion area for that page.
  11. You can blog from anywhere, just remember ALL posts & comments go to me first to monitor so they won’t always show up immediately.


Student Laboratory Safety Contract

I, do hereby agree to observe the following safety procedures while in the science laboratory at Cordova Jr./Sr. High School. I understand that if I violate any of the following safety rules, I may lose the privilege of participating in science labs.
Personal

1. I will wear protective eyewear whenever the instructor says it is necessary.

2. I will not eat or drink in the laboratory unless instructed to do so.

3. I will not participate in, or encourage horseplay of any kind in the laboratory.

4. I will wear extra protective clothing (e.g. apron or gloves) if the instructor says it is necessary.

5. I will report any accidental spill, breakage, or injury however minor to the instructor immediately.

6. I will treat every chemical substance with respect. I will assume every chemical is potentially hazardous even though I may suspect otherwise. This means do not touch chemicals intentionally.

7. I will never smell a chemical directly, but will use the "wafting" technique to fan odors toward my nose.

8. I will familiarize myself with all of the safety devices and procedures in the lab, such as:


  • Fume Hood – with vent fan
  • Safety Eye Wash Station (Push red handle down to engage)
  • Class A. B. C. Fire Extinguisher
  • Fire Blanket
  • First Aid Kit & Survival Kit

9. I will wash my hands thoroughly after each lab; before lab if the instructor says it is necessary.
10. I will make sure liquid & solid materials are "sink safe" before disposing of them down the drain.
11. I will clean up my laboratory work area when I finish working.
12. I will pay close attention to demonstrations of lab techniques and special instructions.
13. If I am not sure, I will ask.

Handling and Care of Equipment
1. I will use great care in handling any and all glassware and equipment. I will report damage to any and all materials or equipment to my instructor.
2. I will beware of handling glass that may be hot. Hot glass looks just like cool glass & may burn.
3. I will return all equipment and materials to their proper locations.
4. I will pay to replace any glassware or other equipment for whose breakage I am deemed responsible.
